Mokra Gora and Drvengrad: a fairytale in western Serbia

Published: 09/06/2026

In the far west of Serbia, between the Tara and Zlatibor mountains, lies a region that looks straight out of a fairytale — Mokra Gora. Known for its untouched nature, famous narrow-gauge railway and the Drvengrad ethno village, it has become one of the country''s most recognisable destinations.

The biggest attraction is the Šargan Eight, a heritage railway that climbs the mountain in a figure-eight through tunnels and over bridges. Riding the vintage train is a unique experience for all ages.

Above Mokra Gora sits Drvengrad, the wooden ethno village built by director Emir Kusturica, host of the Küstendorf film festival. Accommodation here has a special spirit — log cabins, ethno homesteads and rooms, many serving homemade food and rakija.

Mokra Gora is about three and a half hours from Belgrade via Užice, and is beautiful year-round.
