Kopaonik: a guide to Serbia's largest mountain
Published: 09/06/2026
Kopaonik is the largest and best-known mountain resort in Serbia, set in the south of the country. With its highest peak, Pančić''s Peak (2017 m), and national park status, it is a year-round destination — a paradise for skiers in winter and an oasis of cool air and hiking in summer.
The winter season runs from December to April, and the mountain is known for reliable snow and over 55 kilometres of groomed slopes for all levels. Ski schools operate throughout the season, making Kopaonik a great choice for first-timers too.
Summer has its own charm: while the cities swelter, the mountain air stays pleasantly cool. Marked trails lead through pine forests to viewpoints, the Jelovarnik waterfall — the highest in Serbia — and mountain lakes.
Accommodation ranges from hotels and apartments right by the slopes in the centre to cheaper options in the villages of Brzeće and Lisina, reached by panoramic gondola. Apartments with a kitchen are best value for families and longer stays.
Kopaonik is about four hours'' drive from Belgrade. Book early for the winter holidays and New Year, when demand peaks.
