Zlatibor: a guide to Serbia's most popular mountain — what to see and where to stay

Zlatibor is probably the most visited mountain in Serbia, known for its mild climate, wide plateaus and well-developed, year-round tourism. The heart of the resort is around the lake, with a promenade, restaurants and things to do for every age.

What to see and do

The biggest attraction is the Gold Gondola, one of the longest panoramic gondolas in the world, linking central Zlatibor with Tornik. Tornik is the winter ski centre and, in summer, a starting point for hiking. Nearby are Stopića Cave, the Gostilje waterfall, the Sirogojno open-air village and the Šargan Eight — a narrow-gauge railway that climbs in loops through Mokra Gora.

When to go

Zlatibor is a year-round destination. Summer draws people for the cool air, walks and a busy programme; winter for Tornik and a quieter mountain break. The mild climate makes it comfortable for older guests and families with children alike.

Getting there

From Belgrade it is about 230 km by motorway via Užice, around 3 hours. There is also a regular bus service. A car makes it easier to explore the surroundings (Sirogojno, Mokra Gora, Tara).

Where to stay

A practical tip

For the Gold Gondola and in-season weekends, book tickets and accommodation ahead. If you want calm, stay outside the very centre — the lake is an easy walk and the nights are quieter.
