Tara and the Drina: an emerald river and untouched nature

Published: 10/06/2026

In the far west of Serbia, above the emerald waters of the Drina, lies Tara National Park — one of the most beautiful and best-preserved areas in the country. Dense pine forests, deep canyons and rich wildlife make it a paradise for nature lovers.

Tara is home to the endemic Serbian spruce. Marked trails lead to viewpoints, the most famous being Banjska Stena, overlooking the Drina meanders and Lake Perućac.

The Drina is the symbol of this region — its emerald colour draws kayakers, rafters and anglers. The famous little house on the rock near Bajina Bašta is one of Serbia''s most photographed sights.

Accommodation ranges from mountain hotels to log cabins and apartments in Bajina Bašta and Perućac. Tara is about three and a half hours from Belgrade, beautiful year-round.
