Published: 10/06/2026
Niš, the largest city in southern Serbia and one of the oldest in the Balkans, combines rich history, a lively atmosphere and southern hospitality. The birthplace of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, it preserves traces of every era.
The heart of the city is the well-preserved Niš Fortress on the Nišava river, today a favourite promenade. Major sights include the Skull Tower (Ćele Kula) and the Mediana archaeological site, the remains of a lavish Roman residence. The bohemian Kazandžijsko Sokače quarter is famous for grilled food and southern atmosphere.
Nearby Niška Banja offers healing waters and a pleasant climate. Accommodation is varied and affordable, from central hotels and apartments to stays in the spa. Niš is about two and a half hours from Belgrade by motorway.
