Novi Sad: Petrovaradin, EXIT and the spirit of Vojvodina — a guide

Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina on the Danube, is known for its tidy centre, relaxed spirit and the Petrovaradin fortress. It was a European Capital of Culture and, in summer, hosts the EXIT festival.

What to see

The city's symbol is the Petrovaradin fortress with its famous "drunken" clock and views over the Danube and the city. In the centre are Liberty Square with the cathedral and City Hall, the pedestrian Zmaj Jovina and Dunavska streets, the Danube Park and the Museum of Vojvodina. In summer the Štrand, a landscaped city beach on the Danube, is popular.

EXIT and events

At the Petrovaradin fortress in early July, EXIT — one of the biggest festivals in south-east Europe — takes place. The city has a rich cultural and café life all year.

When to go

All year; summer for the Štrand and EXIT, spring and autumn for walking and Fruška Gora.

Getting there

From Belgrade about 80 km by motorway, around an hour; frequent bus and rail links. Nearby is Fruška Gora with its monasteries and wineries.

A practical tip

Combine Novi Sad with Fruška Gora — monasteries, wineries and viewpoints are just half an hour's drive away. For EXIT, book accommodation far ahead.
