Novi Sad: a guide to the "Serbian Athens"
Published: 10/06/2026
Novi Sad, the capital of Vojvodina and Serbia's second-largest city, is known for its relaxed spirit, multiculturalism and rich history. Set on the banks of the Danube with the Petrovaradin Fortress as its symbol, it is ideal for a city break, culture and nightlife.
Tours usually start at Liberty Square with the City Hall, then continue down lively pedestrian streets full of cafés and galleries. Across the Danube rises the Petrovaradin Fortress with its famous clock tower and panoramic views — home to the Exit festival, one of Europe's best-known music festivals.
In summer the Štrand beach on the Danube is a favourite, while nearby Fruška Gora National Park offers monasteries and wine roads. Accommodation suits every budget — hotels and apartments in the centre near the sights. Novi Sad is less than an hour from Belgrade by motorway.
