Subotica: the Art Nouveau pearl of northern Serbia

Published: 10/06/2026

Subotica, a city in the far north of Serbia near the Hungarian border, is known for its lavish Art Nouveau architecture, multiculturalism and calm, elegant spirit — a blend of Serbian, Hungarian, Croatian and Bunjevac traditions.

The city's greatest gem is the City Hall, a monumental Hungarian Secession building with stained glass, while the Synagogue is one of the finest Art Nouveau buildings in Europe. A walk through the centre is like a gallery of early-20th-century architecture.

Just a few kilometres away is Palić, a beloved resort with a lake, park, zoo and famous Art Nouveau buildings. Accommodation in Subotica and Palić includes hotels, villas and apartments, many in Art Nouveau style. Subotica is about two hours from Belgrade by motorway.
