Kragujevac: the first capital of modern Serbia

Kragujevac, the largest city of Šumadija and the first capital of modern Serbia, is a city of rich history, industrial tradition and a lively student spirit. Set in the heart of central Serbia, it is a good base for exploring Šumadija.

As the capital of Prince Miloš Obrenović, Kragujevac is the city of many Serbian "firsts" — the first grammar school, theatre and university. The Old Foundry complex tells this story. The most significant memorial is Šumarice Memorial Park, dedicated to the victims of the October 1941 shootings.

Kragujevac is also a city of parks with a lively cultural scene. Accommodation includes hotels and apartments in the centre, affordable for all budgets. It is about 1.5–2 hours from Belgrade by motorway.
