Kragujevac: the first capital of modern Serbia — a guide

Kragujevac is the largest city of Šumadija and historically the first capital of modern Serbia, where the first university, grammar school and theatre were founded. Today it is a lively university and industrial centre.

What to see

In the centre is the old "Miloš's Wreath" complex with the Amidža Konak and the First Serbian Grammar School. The most significant place of remembrance is the Šumarice memorial park, dedicated to the victims of the WWII shootings, with a museum and the "Pear" and "V-3" ("Interrupted Flight") monuments. The centre has landscaped promenades, cafés and a student atmosphere.

When to go

All year; spring and autumn are most pleasant for walking and sightseeing.

Getting there

From Belgrade about 140 km by motorway, around 1.5–2 hours; frequent bus links.

A practical tip

Kragujevac is a good base for touring Šumadija — monasteries, vineyards and Aranđelovac with Bukovička Banja, all a short drive away.
