Smederevo: city of the largest lowland fortress
Published: 10/06/2026
Smederevo is a city on the banks of the Danube, east of Belgrade, known above all for its magnificent medieval fortress — the largest lowland fortress in Europe. Built in the 15th century as the capital of Despot Đurađ Branković, it stretches along the river with some twenty towers and mighty walls.
Smederevo is also the centre of a renowned wine region, with surrounding vineyards and cellars celebrated at the "Smederevska Jesen" festival. Its proximity to Belgrade (30–60 minutes) makes it ideal for a day trip; nearby are Viminacium and Silver Lake.
Accommodation includes hotels and apartments. Smederevo is about 45 minutes from Belgrade by motorway.
