Kraljevo: the Žiča and Studenica monasteries within reach — a guide

Kraljevo is a city in central Serbia, in the valley of the Ibar river, known for its closeness to the most important Serbian monasteries and its location in the heart of medieval Serbia.

What to see

In the city itself is the large central Square of Serbian Warriors with its monument. But the main reason to come are the surrounding monasteries: Žiča (the "red" endowment, place of coronation of Serbian kings) just a few kilometres from the city, and Studenica — the UNESCO endowment of Stefan Nemanja with white marble and 13th-century frescoes, one of the most important monuments of Serbian culture. Mount Goč and Vrnjačka Banja are also nearby.

When to go

Spring to autumn is loveliest, for the monasteries, the Ibar valley and Goč.

Getting there

From Belgrade about 170 km by motorway, around 2–2.5 hours; frequent bus links.

There are most apartments in Kraljevo in the centre, along with hotels and rooms; Vrnjačka Banja is close too. See the accommodation and enquire directly.

A practical tip

Kraljevo is an ideal base for touring the monasteries — Žiča and Studenica are a short drive away. Combine them with Goč and Vrnjačka Banja for a full weekend.
