Silver Lake: the "Serbian sea" on the Danube — a summer guide

Silver Lake is an artificial lake on the Danube near Veliko Gradište in eastern Serbia, popular as a summer destination — with its sandy beaches and warm water it is called the "Serbian sea". It sits at the entrance to Đerdap National Park.

What to do

The main draw is swimming on landscaped beaches, water sports (kayak, SUP, boating), fishing and cycling along the shore. Nearby is the Golubac fortress on the Danube and the entrance to the Đerdap gorge — one of the finest excursions in Serbia.

When to go

June to September for swimming and water sports. The peak is July–August, also the liveliest.

Getting there

From Belgrade about 130 km via Požarevac and Veliko Gradište, around 1.5–2 hours. A car is most practical.

Where to stay

By the lake there are hotels, apartments, holiday cottages and campsites. In season you book ahead. See the accommodation and enquire directly with the host.

A practical tip

Combine a swim with a trip to the Golubac fortress and Đerdap — the fortress is just fifteen minutes' drive away. For peak season, book accommodation early.
