Zlatar Lake: emerald water below the Zlatar mountain — a guide

Zlatar Lake is an artificial lake on the Uvac river, below the Zlatar mountain in south-western Serbia near Nova Varoš. It is known for its emerald-green water, clean air and calm mountain setting.

What to do

The main draw is boating and kayaking, fishing, summer swimming and shoreline walks. Nearby is the famous Uvac Reserve with its meanders and griffon vultures, and the Zlatar mountain with trails and viewpoints. The region is also known for Zlatar cheese.

When to go

Late spring to autumn for the water, boating and walks. Summer is most pleasant; thanks to the altitude the nights are cool.

Getting there

From Belgrade about 280 km via Užice and Nova Varoš, around 4 hours. A car is essential.

By the lake and on Zlatar there are log cabins, holiday cottages, apartments and ethno households. See the accommodation and enquire directly with the host.

A practical tip

Be sure to combine the lake with a trip to Uvac — the meanders and vultures are one of Serbia's finest sights, just half an hour's drive away.
