Užice: the gateway to western Serbia
Published: 10/06/2026
Užice is the largest city in western Serbia, set in the valley of the Đetinja river, surrounded by hills and close to the best-known mountain destinations — Zlatibor, Tara and Mokra Gora. It is an excellent base for exploring the region.
Above the city rises the medieval Old Town fortress on a rock over the Đetinja canyon, which offers walking trails, waterfalls and one of Europe's oldest hydroelectric plants. The central Partizan Square is among the largest city squares in Serbia.
Užice's biggest asset is proximity: Zlatibor is about 20 minutes away, Mokra Gora half an hour, and Tara National Park an hour. Accommodation includes hotels and apartments. Užice is about two and a half hours from Belgrade by motorway.
