Užice: a city on the Đetinja, gateway to Zlatibor and Tara — a guide

Užice is the largest city in western Serbia, on the Đetinja river, surrounded by mountains. It is known for its old fortress above the canyon, industrial history and its position as a "gateway" to Zlatibor, Tara and Mokra Gora.

What to see

Above the city stands Užice's Old Town (a medieval fortress) over the Đetinja canyon, with trails and viewpoints. On the Đetinja is one of the first hydro power plants in the world built on Tesla's principles. Nearby are the Gostilje waterfall, Zlatibor, Tara and Mokra Gora — all within reach.

When to go

All year; summer and autumn are loveliest for the canyon, walks and mountain trips.

Getting there

From Belgrade about 190 km by motorway via Čačak, around 2.5–3 hours; frequent bus links.

Where to stay

There are most apartments in Užice in the centre, along with hotels and rooms; it also serves as a base for Zlatibor and Tara. See the accommodation and enquire directly.

A practical tip

Užice is an ideal base for touring western Serbia — Zlatibor, Tara, Mokra Gora and Sirogojno are a short drive away. Walk the Đetinja canyon up to the old fortress.
