Serbian lakes in summer — where to swim and where to fish

Serbia has no sea, but it has lakes that do the same job in summer — often without the crowds, the expensive sunbeds or the long drive.

Silver Lake — the "Serbian sea"

The most popular summer destination on the Danube near Veliko Gradište. It has **sandy beaches**, a promenade, water sports and the most facilities of any lake. The water is calm and shallow near the shore, which suits children.

Golubac Fortress and Đerdap National Park are close by.

Lake Palić — Vojvodina elegance

Near Subotica, surrounded by Art Nouveau buildings and a landscaped park. A shallow steppe lake with a bathing area, cycling paths, a zoo and wineries nearby.

Lake Perućac — emerald in a canyon

Serbia's largest reservoir, at over 1,200 m. Known for its **floating peat islands** and exceptionally clean water. Cool in summer — not a classic swimming lake, but unforgettable.

Zlatar and Zaovine lakes — silence

Smaller mountain lakes surrounded by forest. Ideal for fishing, kayaking and a holiday without crowds.

Vlasina, Zlatar and Perućac are traditionally the most prized among anglers. **Permits are issued by local angling associations** — get one before you cast.

Practical tips

- The swimming season runs from **June to early September**.

- Book Silver Lake and Palić early — they are the most sought-after.

- Cottages by the water suit families best: kitchen, yard and your own pace.

- Check the distance from the beach — "by the lake" sometimes means a kilometre's walk.
