Stara Planina: the wild beauty of eastern Serbia

Published: 10/06/2026

Stara Planina, in the far east of Serbia, is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved mountains in the country. Its highest Serbian peak, Midžor (2169 m), is the second highest in Serbia. Protected as a nature park, it is a realm of untouched nature.

The mountain is famous for its waterfalls — Tupavica, Čungulj and the magnificent Pilj — and for the distinctive Babin Zub rock. At Babin Zub there is a ski resort with a cable car and slopes, open from December to March with far shorter queues than larger resorts.

Accommodation includes mountain hotels and apartments at Babin Zub, plus ethno homesteads in nearby villages. Stara Planina is about four hours from Belgrade via Niš and Knjaževac.
